Is Chinese a single language or a group of closely related languages?

I’ve heard some of the Chinese dialects, some of them sound nothing alike. And mostly, a speaker of one dialect can’t understand one of another. It seems purely political and cultural to call it a single language. Isn’t calling Cantonese and Mandarin dialects of Chinese like calling Spanish and French dialects of Latin?
I’ve heard that there are almost as many variations in Chinese are there are between the individual Germanic and Romance languages.

Calling Cantonese and Mandarin dialects of Chinese is not quite like calling Spanish and French dialects of Latin. However, it is a similar idea.

Mandarin and Cantonese are more alike than Spanish and French are. For example, the Mandarin surname Zhou is equivilent to the Cantonese surname Jou. (“Zh” is pronounced similar to the way the “J” in Jacques is pronouced – almost like a combination between the sounds z, j, and sh. “J” in Jou is pronounced just like the J in English, like in Jack.)

However, there are many, many differences between the two dialects. In my opinion, Cantonese is more complex than Mandarin. There are more tones (tones are what you do with your voice- like whether it rises or falls as you say the syllable; this can change the word entirely), and some odd consonant sounds (I’m a Mandarin speaker.) It is extremely difficult, if not entirely impossible, to understand Cantonese if you have only been taught Mandarin.

They are the two most common Chinese dialects, though Mandarin is much more common than Cantonese. When people say the word “Chinese,” they almost always refer to the Mandarin dialect. I wouldn’t say one is more “Chinese” than the other. They are kind of one language since they are both referred to as “Chinese;” however, they really are two languages because of their differences. It depends on how you look at it.

If you want to take her out to eat brunch, I would advise a Dim Sum eatery because those are very popular in China. Dim Sum is eaten as brunch in china every weekend (usually sunday).

Also, if you want to take her out to a date, try to take her somewhere that China DOESN’T have such as symphonies, big amusement parks, high class restaurants, science museums etc. China has a lot of outdoor recreational places such as scenery parks and zoos that are A LOT better than the ones in North America.

This is just a thought (Not advised) but if the person you like speaks Mandarin, then you can learn very short and basic phrases:
One of them is “Wo xi huan ni” which means “I like you”.
