Also, when Russia (USSR) took control of Ukraine, many Ukrainians were shipped off to Russian regions such as Siberia, and many Russians moved into Ukraine. Under the USSR, movement between the two countries was done freely.

Because of these things, the Ukrainians and Russians consider themselves “brothers”, and many Ukrainians will simply tell people “I am Russian”… especially Eastern Ukrainians.
